Standards and conformance are important links in international trade, thus efforts in education infrastructure building in such areas are vital in helping “address the significance of standards
and conformance to trade facilitation in the region”, as called on by the 18th APEC Ministerial Meeting, Hanoi in 2006.
The APEC SCSC-PAGE and its networking is a platform for economies to share and to further improve their individual efforts. With the completion of this Project in 2010, APEC will boost a basic education infrastructure in standards and conformance, for the easy reference and use by academia, government, business etc. in the region.
As the SCSC-PAGE 2009 Chair, I encourage all APEC economies to share with us your needs and your thoughts, and we look forward to your involvement and contribution. |

Often, businesses, particularly SMEs and fresh graduates are not aware of the significance and
impact of standards and conformance in meeting quality, safety or regulatory requirements.
This could lead to designing products that do not meet market requirements. Standards and
conformance could actually be an enabler for businesses to gain access to markets and customer confidence.
My wish for this project is to successfully introduce a set of teaching materials that APEC member
economies could refer to when developing their programmes to enable the awareness and
appreciation of the importance and benefits of standards and conformance amongst managers
of SMEs and students.
